A LITTLE PARADISE AT THE HEAR OF THE ROCKSLIDE AREA

The wide open valley basin of Längenfeld and its lush green meadows cover some 20 dreamlike kilometers. Also the Waterfall in Lehn reminds of a fairytale: masses of Alpine waters are falling about 80 meters into the impressive ravine. Benches and wooden platforms invite you to take a deep breath, offering fabulous panoramic views of the huge plain. A giant rockslide some 10,000 years ago has left many traces still visible today, comprising the dreamlike flora and fauna in the entire landslide area. Right in the middle of this awesome scenery you'll find a shallow, jade-colored mountain lake which makes children's hearts beat faster thanks to a number of sustainable constructions. There is always action either at lake Winkelbergsee, in the small water park nearby or on the exciting Geology & Animal Theme Trail.

Quaint Wurzbergalm mountain inn nestles just above the lake, between Alpine pastures and deep green mountain forests. Varied sounds and scents of the forest accompany you towards the little village of Köfels, formed by the Köfels rockslide on a high-altitude plateau. Soon you will reach Umhausen, the stage's destination down on the valley floor.

Turn-by-turn directions

The hike takes you behind the campsite of Längenfeld along the Ötztaler Ache in the direction of the Lehner-Au valley. At the end of the small hamlet, follow the signs to the museum of local history. Below the mighty Lehner waterfall, the path continues on the right. You walk past old wooden huts and through the hamlet Unterried. Slowly you leave the houses behind and pass huge fields. Follow this road and turn left at the next fork. Soon you turn left again and get onto a forest road that leads to Winkelbergsee. If you follow the signs in the direction of Wurzbergalm, you can either take the wide forest path or take the narrow mountain path, which after about 25 minutes walk branches off to the left. From the Wurzbergalm turn right along an old forest road and follow the path to Köfels. From Köfels you descend in serpentines through a light forest on a hiking trail until you reach the Ötztaler Ache. The Ötztaler Ache and the main road across to Maurach and hike behind the small sawmill steeply uphill to the hamlet Arzwinkel. There you cross the Niederthaier country road and walk through a small forest to the bustling Bischofsplatz and from there to the center of Umhause
