The popular Ötztaler Cycle Marathon takes place on 02 September 2018 in the year of the great Tirolean Road Cycling World Championship. While the renowned Cycle Marathon will celebrate its 38th edition, the PRO Ötztaler 5500 UCI Race – held for the first time in 2017 – goes on a break due to scheduling reasons.
The unrivaled Ötztaler Cycle Marathon, ranking among the most traditional and toughest cycle marathon races world-wide, will be held on 02 September 2018. Exactly three weeks prior to the UCI Road Cycling World Championships taking place in Tirol, where also the Ötztal will play a leading role – hosting the start of the Elite Women’s and Men’s Team Time Trial Competition in the Area 47 at the entrance to Ötztal.
The international mix of participants in the Ötztaler Cycle Marathon, comprising athletes from fifty different countries in the last edition, amounts to a maximum of 4000 start places. Already since 2008, the highly coveted start places have been drawn by lots. Cycling aficionados can officially register on the website between 01 and 28 February 2018. The main drawing will take place on 08 March 2018.
On a total length of 238 kilometers straight through Austria and Italy, with start and finish in Sölden, the motivated participants have to conquer four challenging Alpine passes - Kühtai, Brenner, Jaufenpass and the 28.7 kilometer long ascent to Timmelsjoch. “The Ötztaler Cycle Marathon can look back on a unique history of success, ranking among the cult cycle events for amateur sportsmen. The ancient “Myth of the Ötztaler“ is coupled with permanently improving structures and quality criteria to meet the requirements of all male and female participants,” states Oliver Schwarz, Managing Director of Ötztal Tourismus.
PRO Ötztaler 5500 takes a break in 2018
After the highly successful premiere event of the 2017 PRO Ötztaler 5500 UCI Race, held on the original Ötztaler Cycle Marathon race track two days before, the new highlight is forced to go on a break in the 2018 season due to timetable reasons. “The reason for that are time schedule problems caused by TV broadcasting licenses in the UCI Race Calendar. Therefore we decided not to organize the toughest one-day cycle race for Pros in 2018, focusing exclusively on the classic Ötztaler Cycle Marathon event,” Oliver Schwarz explains. “We are already well underway to find a date for the PRO Ötztaler 5500 in 2019, followed by an official request sent to the UCI world federation. However, the 2018 summer season will entirely focus on cycling sports. Besides the Bike Republic Sölden, the World Championship team trial competition and the unrivaled Ötztaler Cycle Marathon, the Ötztal Valley offers cycling and biking sports at their finest- for all abilities and preferences.“
