We warmly welcome you to our great Birthday Party!

The ultimate "Ötztaler" celebrates already its 30th birthday and everyone is warmly invited to join us. On 22 August 1982, the Ötztaler Cycle Marathon was officially kicked-off. Exactly 154 cyclists started the race from the Wilten Basilica in Innsbruck at 6:15 am in the morning. A quite small group of male racers from five different countries. Only one year later the first female athletes dared to participate.
Today, almost 30 years later, some 10,000 cycling fans register online for the coveted 4,000 starting places in the marathon, which are sold out after a few minutes. Of course there are as well plenty of female participants among the racers, and their finishing times are remarkably convincing also for the men.
There are only few reasons why the "Ötztaler" has become one of the most renowned cycle marathons in the Alps: the Ötztaler Cycle Marathon ranks among the most successful road cycling races thanks to the big number of international participants, the huge amount of volunteers, the expert organizinig committee of Ernst Lorenzi, and the untiring support of Heike Klotz. Thank you to all of you! No less than 150 out of 700 persons take care of the refreshment stations and provide the cyclists with snacks and drinks - giving them tonic wings! A perfect collaboration coupled with a fine entertainment program makes the "Ötztaler" a truly wonderful Premier League cycle event. And we are very proud of it!
I would be pleased to give you a hearty welcome to our "30th Anniversary Party" taking place in the Ötztal. Maybe you have already thought about spending some more days in the scenic Ötztal valley? Then check out the mde to measure package deals available at countless hotels.
Good luck to everyone!

Sporty greetings and best regards...

Yours, Oliver Schwarz

30. Anniversary Marathon

Again 4000 cyclists will participate in the race. A bigger number of participants is not recommended but countless highlights will add to a memorable event for all cyclists.

On the occasion of the anniversary marathon we search 30 starters - with already reserved starting places - who participate in the marathon with vintage bicycles (year of construction: 1985 or earlier), wearing woolen nostalgia shirts!

These special participants are not subject to the official draw of starting places. In case we have more than 30 nostalgia cyclists who meet the requirements, the organizing committee will choose the participants. A separate nostalgia class ranking is available as well.

All those who are interested in this special highlight are warmly invited to send a photo of themselves, wearing the woolen bicycle outfit, and their bicycles - including detailed pictures of the bike's cogs, the saddle, the shifting and derailing system - to the organizing committee.

All pictures can be sent via e-mail to radmarathon@oetztal.com

Starting Liste

The 29th Ötztaler Cycle Marathon ...

... a success story and for many participants also a

Mutiny of every muscle fiber

Exactly 3900 participants from 31 different countries passed the starting line in Sölden at 6:45 am. Some 13 hours and 35 minutes later the last cyclists, Italy's Marco Braga, reached the finish line at Sölden's Freizeit Arena as finisher number 3741.

Once again the Italian Armada was almost unbeatable! Emanuele Negrini, winner of the Ötztaler in 2006 and 2007, won the marathon for the third time - in only 7:07 hours – with tears in his eyes. "I suffered a lot on the way up to Jaufen Pass. The speed of the leading group was much too high for me", admitted the winner.
Bester Österreicher: The best Austrian cyclist was speed ice skater Bernhard Laimgruber from Innsbruck on the seventh place, 7:18.42 hours. The women's results were quite surprising: the Belgian Edith van den Brande from Gent established a new record of 7:53.32 hours. Manuela Grünzweil from Helfenberg came second and is therefore the best female Austrian athlete, 8:16.33 hours.

Facts on the Ötztaler Cycle Marathon:

The biggest group of 2500 starters came from Germany, followed by Italy (813) and Austria (700).

In the course of the marathon we distributed no less than 11000 bananas, 12000 Corny muesli bars and 12.5 liters/person of drinks. The most demanded drink at the last two refreshment stations was Red Bull which is said to give a real energy boost. Every participant burned between 5000 and 8000 calories during the marathon. A total number of more than 700 assistants guaranteed a safe and perfectly organized event.
